Endovascular Treatment of Carotid Artery Disease

  • Overview
  • Presenters

Atherosclerotic carotid stenosis is a blockage of the main artery to the neck. It is a common cause of stroke in America. This video presents endovascular stenting to treat carotid stenosis. It is a minimally invasive procedure that is an alternative to the standard surgical procedure, carotid endarterectomy. Physicians insert a catheter with a tiny balloon in the tip into the narrowed artery. Inflating the balloon compresses fatty tissue and widens the inner artery improving blood flow. Then they insert and deploy a stent to keep the artery from narrowing again.
