Mesothelioma: Extrapleural Pneumonectomy
Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an asbestos related cancer involving the lining of the lung and chest wall. Without treatment patients survive only four to 12 months. Surgical intervention along with chemotherapy and radiation therapy is improving survival rates in a subset of patients.
This video demonstrates an extrapleural pneumonectomy involving exposure of the parietal pleura, dissection of the tumor and parietal pleura from the chest wall, diaphragm, and mediastinum, division and control of the pulmonary vessels and bronchus, en bloc resection of the tumor and reconstruction of the diaphragm and pericardium.
