Innovations in Chronic Pain Management

Edgar L. Ross, MD, Director, Pain Management Center at BWH, discusses how chronic pain differs from acute pain and our team-based approach (including experts in psychiatry, psychology, neurology, physiatry, and anesthesiology) that requires the patient to be an active participant in the treatment plan. Treatment plans address the physical and psychological components of chronic pain and rehabilitation.

Dr. Ross also describes research being conducted at BWH including clinical trials evaluating new pain medications, a mobile app designed to help patients manage chronic pain outside of the doctor’s office and a risk assessment tool that helps predict if patients should avoid the use of opiate medications.
